About Isle Royale:
Experience the Northwoods at the remote Isle Royale National Park, located in the middle of Lake Superior. Known as the most remote national park, Isle Royale is only accessible by boat or seaplane. The park is home to moose, wolves, loons, beavers, foxes, & birdlife. Lake Superior & the island’s inlands lakes offer excellent fishing & photographic sites for viewing pristine forest & waterways. There are also diving opportunities abound in the many shipwrecks of Lake Superior.

Deckhands assist Boat Pilots in operating Rock Harbor Lodge boats on sightseeing excursions, water charters, sightseeing charters, and fishing charters, carrying passengers for hire. Sightseeing excursions are generally half-day trips to interesting historical and natural points of interest on the northeast end of Isle Royale National Park.

Job Responsibilities

• Deckhands must assist boat pilots in operating boats in a manner that always places passenger safety first.
• Deckhands must insure the Passengers board and exit the boats in a safe manner.
• Deckhands assist in keeping the boats in good operation and safe operation condition.
• Deckhands are responsible for the cleanliness of the boats and for keeping them orderly and neat.
• Deckhands are responsible for safeguarding the equipment issued to each boat.

Qualifications

• A Deckhand should possess a good working knowledge of the Rules of the Road, Navigation, Seamanship, Safety, and Rules and regulations, in support of the under the direction of the boat pilot while the boat is underway. 
• A Deckhand should possess a good working knowledge of VHF marine radios and operation procedures. Deckhands must be able to lift a passenger’s 40-60 lb. Backpack to chest height as part of the normal routine of loading and unloading the boats. 
• Normal and routine line handling duties require mobility sufficient to allow a deckhand to pass along a narrow boat gunwale with good dexterity and move quickly during docking. 
• During routine cleaning duties a deckhand may be required to enter a cramped hull compartment on hands and knees and should possess the mobility needed for this task.
