Job Description

Primary Function

The Quality Improvement Specialist plays a key role in monitoring hospital compliance with regulatory requirements. This is accomplished through concurrent and retrospective electronic medical record audits and abstracting relevant clinical information. This information is compiled for reports provided to Clinical, Administrative and Executive Leaders. The Quality Improvement specialist ensures that regulatory data is submitted to regulatory agencies including the Center for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS), the Department of Health (DOH), and The Joint Commission (TJC). The Specialist works under the direction of the Director of Quality in maintaining a state of continuous readiness for regulatory surveys. The Specialist interacts effectively with clinical staff and provides education in hospital Quality of Care measures. The Specialist participates in quality improvement projects and facilitates improvements in hospital care.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts concurrent and retrospective medical record audits to meet the requirements for CMS, DOH, TJC, and other regulatory bodies.

  • Plays a significant role with compliance monitoring activities such as TJC readiness and State licensure requirements.

  • Prepares summary reports of quality data and improvement activities for presentation to internal and external audiences.

  • Collaborates with department leaders and staff to develop and review quality reports and to provide clinical/technical expertise.

  • Provides analytical support for clinical/unit-based quality improvement activities.

  • Serves on standing and ad-hoc committees, teams, and task forces.

  • Enhances Professional growth and development.

  • Preserves and protects patient’s rights to confidentiality.

  • Performs other job-related duties as required or requested.

Job Qualifications and Specifications

    • Education/Certification:
      • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or related field
      • National Association of Healthcare Quality Certification (CPHQ) preferred or willing to obtain
    • Training and Experience:
      • At least three years’ experience in a hospital setting as a clinician or care manager—nursing preferred
      • Experience working in behavioral healthcare preferred
    • Knowledge and Skills:
      • Demonstrates advanced level of knowledge and understanding of hospital practices, and medical terminology
      • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital regulatory and accreditation requirements
      • Demonstrates interest in advancing quality and safety improvement activities
      • Demonstrates knowledge of quality improvement tools and implementation options
      • Working knowledge of computer applications & software (Excel, Word, Cerner, EPIC, etc).
      • Working knowledge of mathematics and/or data analytics methodologies
      • Demonstrates strong organization and communication skills, both oral and written.
      • Demonstrates ability to effectively interpret and apply policies and procedures; exercises considerable judgement in addressing or elevating unusual and sometimes complex problems.
      • Provides analytical support for clinical/unit-based quality improvement activities.
      • Serves on standing and ad-hoc committees, teams, and task forces.
      • Enhances Professional growth and development.

Schedule: 40/80 Full Time Days
