JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title

Senior Systems Engineer, Ultrasound R&D (Reedsville, PA)

Job Description

Philips is a global leader in health technology, and our Ultrasound division develops advanced medical imaging systems that improve patient care. In this role, you have the opportunity to help us deliver impact with care by ensuring our ultrasound products are manufactured to the highest standards and continue to perform reliably in the field. As a Senior Systems Engineer in the Ultrasound R&D organization, you will play a pivotal role in sustaining and improving our ultrasound systems by supporting manufacturing operations and driving engineering improvements. You will work closely with Philips manufacturing operations team, and you will also spend up to 20% of your time traveling to collaborate with our network of global suppliers.

Your role:

  • Production Line Support: Provide on-site engineering support to the Reedsville production line for ultrasound systems. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in real time to minimize downtime. Drive continuous improvements on the manufacturing floor to improve yield, reduce cycle time, and eliminate defects (DEFOA) in production processes. This includes developing and implementing test process improvements and ensuring smooth integration of any design changes into production.

  • Sustaining Engineering Projects: Lead and contribute to sustaining engineering initiatives for released ultrasound products. This involves investigating and resolving complex product issues that arise in manufacturing or in the field. You will conduct root cause analysis of failures or complaints, identify corrective actions, and implement design or process changes as needed to prevent recurrence . Ensure all changes are properly verified/validated and documented according to quality system requirements.

  • Supplier Collaboration: Work closely with suppliers and the supply chain team to address component issues and obsolescence. Coordinate with external suppliers to qualify new or alternate components , resolve quality problems, and improve component reliability. Act as a technical interface for suppliers to ensure that provided parts meet Philips specifications and that any supplier changes are assessed for impact on the system.

  • Cross-Functional Teamwork: Act as a bridge between R&D, manufacturing, quality, and regulatory teams to drive effective solutions. Collaborate with design engineers, reliability engineers, production engineers, and quality/regulatory specialists to ensure alignment on requirements and timely resolution of issues. You will often lead or facilitate technical discussions across disciplines (electrical, mechanical, software) to ensure that system-level considerations are addressed in any changes or improvements.

  • Continuous Improvement & Compliance: Proactively identify opportunities to enhance product reliability and manufacturing efficiency. Lead sustaining design changes or process optimizations that improve system performance, serviceability, or cost-effectiveness. Conduct technical reviews, feasibility studies, and risk assessments for proposed changes to mitigate potential issues. Ensure compliance with medical device regulations and standards (FDA, ISO 13485, IEC 60601, etc.) in all design and process changes, and maintain meticulous documentation to meet Quality Management System (QMS) requirements. By driving these continuous improvement and compliance activities, you help extend the product lifecycle and maintain high customer satisfaction for our ultrasound systems.

You will be part of the Ultrasound Systems Engineering team within our global R&D organization, working in close partnership with colleagues in product development and operations across different sites. This role does not have direct reports, but as a senior engineer you are expected to provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers as needed, and take initiative in driving projects to completion.

You're the right fit if:

  • You’ve acquired 5+ years of hands-on experience in electrical hardware development for medical devices (design and/or testing of electronic hardware). This should include familiarity with analog/digital circuits and system-level integration. Knowledge of regulatory standards (FDA regulations, ISO 13485 quality systems, IEC 60601 safety standards, etc.) and design controls for medical devices is highly valued.

  • Your skills include solid understanding of electronics hardware (PCBAs, power supplies, interconnects, etc.) and ability to troubleshoot complex electro-mechanical systems. You are proficiency with lab test equipment and reading electrical schematics and electrical hardware design documentation.

  • You have a BS and preferably a MS degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. It’s a bonus if you have an INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP).

  • You have proven ability to perform root cause analysis of hardware issues and drive problems to resolution, including use of structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g. Kepner-Tregoe or Six Sigma tools) in past projects.

  • You must be able to successfully perform the following minimum Physical, Cognitive and Environmental job requirements with or without accommodation for this position .

  • You have strong communication skills and a track record of effective collaboration in cross-functional teams. Experience leading technical discussions with suppliers or manufacturing teams is a plus.

How we work together

We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 3 days per week. Onsite roles require full-time presence in the company’s facilities. Field roles are most effectively done outside of the company’s main facilities, generally at the customers’ or suppliers’ locations.

This is an onsite role.
